Semifinal of Czechoslovak ch + Master tournament

Postcard signed by 19 players

Sent by Master Louma to his wife

dated 13. II. 1952

 

Size: 14 x 9 cm.

Good to very good: light signs of use, no flaws. 

On the 10th-22nd February 1952, 2 tournaments were played in the town of Dražice:

1)    Semifinal of Czechoclovak championship, 14 players, the co-winners were masters Vilem Olexa and Karel Opocensky – see crosstable in picture 4 (scanned from Ceskoslovensky sach 1952, p.44)

2)    Master tournament, 12 players, the winner was master Frantisek Pithart – see crosstable in picture 5 (scanned from Ceskoslovensky sach 1952, p.45)

The sender of the postcard is master Josef Louma. The addressee is his wife. Louma's signature is just after the introductory text, followed by the signatures of another 18 chess players in three columns.

Of the 19 signatures, 12 are from the Semi-final, 6 are from the Master tournament and one signature is not identified. The signatures of the Master tournament are in bold letters:

Left column: Opocensky, Dvorak, Brat, Vyslouzil, Sery, Rajkovic, Novak, Hruskova-Belska

Middle column: Olexa, Pithart, ???, Leitner, Alster, Vranek

Right column: Sucha, Schmidt, Sevcik, Lukes

Biographical data of some persons:

Josef Louma (1898-1955), strong Czech master, FIDE vice-president 1951-54, journalist (Ceskoslovensky sach etc), chess composer - author of some 60 endgame studies.

Karel Opocensky (1892-1975), strong chess master, author of several books. His best years were 1920s and 1930s: 4 times Czechoslovak champion (1927, 1929, 1938, 1944). He took part in chess olympiads 1931, 1933, 1935 and 1939. At the 1933 chess olympiad made Opocensky 12,5 points of 14 and helped considerably to the 2nd place of the Czechoslovak team.

Antonin Vyslouzil, strong player, he participated in 4 Student World Team championships from Uppsala 1956 to Budapest 1959.

Nina Hruskova-Belska (1925-2015), born in USSR, since 1943 lived in Czechoslovakia. 7x Czechoslovak women champion between 1943-1956. She participated in women Candidates‘ tournament in 1952. She was 4x arbiter in World women championship 1959-1969. She stopped active play in 1958.

Vilem Olexa (1897-1975), strong Czechoslovak master (since 1923), multiple Brno champion, several times participated in Czechoslovak championship.

Frantisek Pithart (1915-2003), Czech master (since 1951) and noted trainer. One of the best Czech players after wws. He participated many times in the finals of Czechoslovak championships. He took part in the chess olympiad Helsinki 1952 and in European team championship 1957. Author of many books and articles.

Ruzena Sucha, 1907-1989, one of the best women Czech players in the middle of 20th century. 3x Czechoslovak champion, many silver and bronze medals in Czechoslovak championship.
