Praha 1952 chess tournament
organized by chess club Aljechin Praha
to the 30th anniversary of its founding

The photo is from the tournament, which was organized by chess club Aljechin Praha to 30th anniversary of its founding. After communist putsch in February 1948, the club was renamed and in time of the tournament it had a strange name: „Chess club Aljechin – CKD Stalingrad Praha“.
It was a strong national tournament, with 12 Masters (marked as „m“ in the crosstable) among the 12 participants. The photo shows 11 of 12 participants (missing Josef Marsalek).

Biographical data of some participants:
Frantisek Pithart (1915-2003), Czech master (since 1951) and noted trainer. One of the best Czech players after wws. He participated many times in the finals of Czechoslovak championships - his best results were 2x shared third place in 1955 and 1965. He represented Czechoslovakia in the chess olympiad Helsinki 1952 and in European team championship 1957. Author of many books and articles.
Frantisek Zita (1909-1977), Czech IM, 2x co-winner of Czech(oslovak) championship, multiple winner of Prague chess championship. Zita was strong positional player, took part in 5 chess olympiads.
Ladislav Alster (1927-1991), Czechoslovak champion in 1956, a member of team which won world student championship in Oslo 1954, took part in chess olympiad Moscow 1956.
Jiri Vesely (1932-2009), Czech master, member of Czechoslovak team, which won the first World Student championship in Oslo 1954 - Vesely scored 5,5 points of 7 games. Noted chess writer, journalist, author of several books, some of which became bestsellers. Germanist, Professor of the Charles University in Prague.
Josef Dobias (1886-1981), Czech master (since 1911), in 1920s one of editors of the main Czech magazine Casopis ceskoslovenskych sachistu.
