Howard Staunton was considered the strongest player in the world between 1843 and 1851. He was a journalist by profession and founded the first English chess magazine "The Chess Players Chronicle" in 1841. The main part of this edition deals with the area of openings and with smaller sections endgames and problems. The book became the standard work of the 19th century.
