A popular and scientific introduction to the game of chess. New edition. London (George Bell) 1890. With a black and white frontispiece and some diagrams. VIII, 544 pages. Includes a catalogue of Bohn's libraries. 23 pages.

Howard Staunton was considered the strongest player in the world between 1843 and 1851. He was a journalist by profession and founded the first English chess magazine "The Chess Players Chronicle" in 1841. The main part of this edition deals with the area of ​​openings and with smaller sections endgames and problems. The book became the standard work of the 19th century.
