A popular and scientific introduction to the game of chess. London (George Bell) 1897. With a black and white frontispiece and some diagrams. VIII, 544 pages. Includes a classified catalogue of selected work from George Bell and Sons and an alphabetical list of Bohn's libraries. 40 pages.
Howard Staunton was considered the strongest player in the world between 1843 and 1851. He was a journalist by profession and founded the first English chess magazine "The Chess Players Chronicle" in 1841. The main part of this edition deals with the area of openings and with smaller sections endgames and problems. The book became the standard work of the 19th century.
