Chicco / Porecca p.395 gives the note that the original edition from 1749 and 1777 was frequently reissued, and had been edited by well-known chess players such as Sanson, Rust, Horwitz etc.
Philidor (1726 - 1795) was the greatest master of the 18th century and the strongest player in the world after his competitive victories against Stamma.
