DESCRIPTION

Márquez Sterling Manuel, Match de ajedrez jugado entre los Sres. Andrés C. Vázquez y Manuel Márquez Sterling en el Club de Ajedrez de la Habana en agosto de 1894. Club Mariano Eguiluz, Mexico 1895. In Spanish. 32 pages. 14,5 x 11 cm. Not in LN. Not in Kieler Schachkatalog. Not in Di Felice.

A small book about a chess match played between Messrs. Andrés C. Vázquez and Manuel Márquez Sterling at the Havana Chess Club in August 1894. The book contains a handwritten dedication by the author in French to Samuel Gold (1835-1920, Hungarian physician, journalist and composer of chess problems who lived in New York from 1892).

Manuel Márquez Sterling (1872-1934) was a Cuban diplomat and interim President of Cuba for a few hours on January 18, 1934. He was also a chess player and author, national champion of both Cuba and Mexico. He played in a tournament in Paris in 1900 attended by many of the stars of the time (Lasker, Pillsbury, Marshall, Maroczy, Chigorin, Schlechter, Janowski and others).

Andrés Clemente Vásquez (1844 - 1901) was a chess player, author and an important Cuban and Mexican chess figure in the second half of the nineteenth century. He was the Mexican champion and competed in matches with the strongest chess players of his time (Steinitz, Lasker, Blackburne, Chigorin, Gunsberg, etc.)

Extremely rare book and almost impossible to find. As far as I know this book has never appeared in the Klittich auctions or on LSAK.

Condition - Good: private binding without lettering, paper browned by age (especially the first and last page), previous owner's stamp on the title page.
