"The following trifle is offered to chess - players, as a compilation of all the anecdotes and quotations that could be found relative to the game of chess; with an account of all the chess - books which could be procured ..." Richard Twiss (1747 - 1821) also brought extensive quotations from "ancient books". In his adaptation he took into account the Italian text by Vercis Lettere from 1778, French texts; made critical observations on Sarasin and Fréret and compared the Latin text of Vida with English translations by G. Jeffreys, W. Erskine.
Condition: Privately bound in half leather. Some use. Paper yellowed. Spots inside. Penned notes. Stamps Frantisek Moucka.
