The author (1797 - 1840) was a French chess master and strongest player of the early 19th century. He defeated Deschapelles in 1821, whose pupil he was. In 1834 he won against Alexander McDonnell. His chess textbook was tailored to the needs of amateurs. The diagrams are printed in large format on a full page.
