Teplice 1953
Training tournament of Czechoslovak national team

Close to very good: minor wear to the right top corner, otherwise OK. Pen and pencil signatures on the back.
The tournament of the six top Czechoslovak players was played in town Teplice from 7 to 19 June 1953. The winner was GM Filip ahead of Pachman, Zita, Ficht, Sajtar, Ujtelky. Double-round robin, see crosstable.
The persons in the photo are:
Sitting from the left: organizer, organizer, Zita, Emil Richter (trainer), Sajtar, Filip, Pachman, Fichtl, Ujtelky.
Standing from the left: tournament organizers and staff. Second from the left is the well-known Teplice player and later organizer of many tournaments Bedrich Seliger.
The signatures on the back:
Left column: Zita, Filip, Fichtl, Pachman.
Right column: Emil Richter (trainer), Sajtar, Ujtelky.
The inscription above the door, below the painting of Lenin playing chess with Maxim Gorky, reads: Soviet chess players our model.
Biographical data:
Miroslav Filip (1928-2009), the best Czechoslovak player in 1950s, one of world's best chess players around 1960, World Championship Candidate 1956 and 1962. Multiple Czechoslovak chess champion. He played in 12 olympiads.
Ludek Pachman (1924-2003), Czech GM, in 1940s and 1950s the best Czechoslovak player together with M. Filip, 7x Czechoslovak champion, German champion. He took part on many chess olympiads. Chess writer and theoretician. He won 2 games against Bobby Fischer in 1959.
Frantisek Zita (1909-1977), Czech IM, 2x co-winner of Czech(oslovak) championship, multiple winner of Prague chess championship. Zita was strong positional player, took part on 5 chess olympiads.
Jiri Fichtl (1922-2003), Czech IM, one of the best Czechoslovak players in 1950s-60s, 2x Czechoslovak champion. In 1954-1962, he played in 5 olympiads.
Jaroslav Sajtar (1921-2003), Czech master, FIDE vice-president in 1954-1974, honorary FIDE GM.
Maxmilian (Max) Ujtelky (1915-1979), Slovak IM, Czechoslovak co-champion in 1960, he was by the way a direct descendant of Hungarian composer Ferenc Liszt.
Emil Richter (1894-1971), strong Czech master and trainer (Jansa), an expert on endgames.
