DESCRIPTION

"SEXTO TORNEO SUDAMERICANO DE AJEDREZ"

MAR DEL PLATA 1936 by Club de Ajedrez Jaque Mate

Author's dedication (E. Alegría) for Dr. Jacobo A. Seitz!!

Number 006 of a numbered and limited edition

EXTREMELY RARE, INCREDIBLY SCARCE AND PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!!!

Alegría, Enrique (Dir.): "SEXTO TORNEO SUDAMERICANO DE AJEDREZ". MAR DEL PLATA 1936. Organizado por la Federación Argentina de Ajedrez.

Buenos Aires, Club de Ajedrez Jaque Mate, 1936. Private half hardback binding with gold Title in spine. Original front cover + Title page + Beautiful group photo of the 16 participants, organizers and different personalities, with their facsimile signatures + II unnumbered Foreword pages (by Enrique Alegría with your facsimile signature) + II unnumbered pages (by Paulino Alles Monasterio with your facsimile signature+ Cross-table page + 62 pages + 2 unnumbered Index pages of games. Mimeographed and printed in recto. 27,7 x 22,2 cm. In Spanish. I'm practically sure that the number 006 behind the Title page indicates that this is a numbered and limited edition, since the copy that I sold in September 2019 also had it (number 102).

Good to very good: General very good or excellent condition. The relatively flexible hardcover is "rubbed" at the corners and spine, and has a slight crease at the bottom of the front cover, best seen on the inside. Foxing mainly affects the safeguards, the back of the photo and the prologue and the last page, less the front cover, and with little effect on the interior, at times it almost disappears. There are only 2 pages with a fair page cut (pages 3 and 54), but the text is perfectly visible.

The current copy is in much better condition than the auctioned in 2019, sold for 727 EUR!! The pages are better cut and bound, without any page with the cut text, as the 2019 copy had in a couple of pages, and it has much less foxing than the 2019 copy. In the following link it is possible to see the photos of the copy sold in 2019: https://photos.app.goo.gl/JyTK4iYPnLTzuZx86. It is true that this does not retain the protective tissue paper of the photo, although it is true that this is the largest source (tissue paper) of foxing in many books. Also, it is true that the September 2019 auction copy (http://www.chesslund.com/detail.asp?id=16552) was bound together (this may or may not be a positive thing) with Reinfeld, Fred: "VENTNOR CITY TOURNAMENT 1939", although clearly the price reached of 727 EUR was due to the book "SEXTO TORNEO SUDAMERICANO DE AJEDREZ". MAR DEL PLATA 1936, since the Reinfeld's book "VENTNOR CITY TOURNAMENT 1939" was sold at a Stikuw auction for only 97 EUR (http://www.chesslund.com/detail.asp?id=9638). Comparing to the copy I sold in 2019, the copy of the 2019 auction had better binding (this is a minor advantage as the current copy can be bound again and brilliantly improved), but the interior is clearly better of the current copy (this cannot be improved at all, so having a good interior is clearly more important than a good binding). And the Author's dedication adds a special value to this copy.

There is a very special copy, dedicated (June 20, 1939) by the Author, Enrique Alegría, for Dr. Jacobo A. Seitz (famous Argentine player and author of some books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Seitz). Enrique Alegría was a strong Argentine player, founding member of the Checkmate Chess Club, and was its President since its foundation on December 1, 1927.

The dedication reads as follows:

"Al dilecto amigo

Dr. Jacobo A. Seitz

con mi testimonio de

amistad". Buenos Aires, 20/6/1939

                                    E. Alegría

"To the beloved/favorite friend Dr. Jacobo A. Seitz with my testimony of friendship".

In Spanish "dilecto" is a cultism, equivalent to “predilecto” (favorite).

L/N 5527; Di Felice 1248.1.

"SEXTO TORNEO SUDAMERICANO DE AJEDREZ": "FIRST PUBLISHED TOURNAMENT BOOK IN ARGENTINA AND MAYBE IN SOUTH AMERICA" (Alles Monasterio).

AN AUTHENTIC RARITY, VERY SCARCE AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO FIND!! In the 33 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2021 June, a copy of this rare book was never auctioned!!

AN ABSOLUTE RARITY, ESPECIALLY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE PRACTICALLY NULL INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET AND BY THE PRINTING METHOD (VERY BAD TO PROPERLY KEEP THE BOOK).
