DESCRIPTION

1939 "WHEN DOCTORS DISAGREE"

LIMITED EDITION of 50 Copies

Includes a letter from Author H. D'O. Bernard

dated 1939 to the chess composer Donald Henry Hersom

Extremely rare and scarce, and incredibly hard to find

Bernard, H. D'O.: "When Doctors Disagree" by H. D'O. BERNARD. This Edition is limited to 50 Copies. Foreword by T. R. Dawson.

Stroud, "Stroud News" Publishing Co., Ltd., 1939. Original stapled softback edition. 30 pages (including first safeguard and Title page) + 1 blank sheet. 21,1 x 13,7 cm. In English.

Good: Very light browning on the edges of the covers. Some slight wrinkles, although the only defect worth noting is the rust on the staples which has caused the spine to break and the stain of the pages (especially the central ones) at the staple locations. Minimal correction of the name of the composer from Problem 3, on page 10. Label on the inside of the front cover, mentioning that this copy was donated in 2000 by Hersom to the British Chess Problem Society.

L/N 2814; Kieler Schachkatalog 6322; Betts 30-21. Betts: "The published version of a 1934 lecture to the British Chess Problem Society, incorporating 24 problems in a general critical discussion on problem construction."

Includes a letter from Author H. D'O. Bernard to the chess composer Donald Henry Hersom. The letter, dated August 10, 1939 clears any doubt about the exact year of its publication.

In the following link there is some information about Hersom: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~rjcc/corn47.htm

"Hersom

A magazine we mention too little in these pages is The Problemist, the organ of the British Chess Problem Society. In the current issue, Sir Jeremy Morse contributes an article on the little-known problemist D.H. Hersom, who was active in the 1930s. Sir Jeremy was reminded, when he used one of Hersom's problems in a talk last year, that nothing was known about the problemist save that he was British. The BCPS Librarian, John Beasley, discovered that he was living in Barking, East London, in 1942. The electoral roll confirmed that Donald Henry Herson was at that address in 1939. Sir Jeremy then visited the Family Records Centre, where he discovered that Herson had been born in Ilford on 11/1/1914 and married in Bath in 1947, when he was living in Bishop Aukland. He found a Mr John Herson in the Durham telephone directory, who informed Sir Jeremy, to his immense delight, that his father was alive and well and still interested in chess problems. A nice story."
