DESCRIPTION

1939 "FORTY TWO-MOVERS 1919-1939"

COPY 27 of a LIM. & NUMB. EDITION of 200 Copies

Rare and scarce, and incredibly hard to find

Cooke, Reginald B.: "FORTY TWO-MOVERS 1919-1939". With a Frontispiece in Three. By REGINALD B. COOKE. SOMETIME CAPTAIN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AND MEMBER OF THE HARVARD UNIVERSITY INTERCOLLEGIATE CHESS TEAMS. MEMBER OF THE BRITISH CHESS PROBLEM SOCIETY.

PortlandThe Bradford Press, 1939. Original red hardback linen edition, with gold Title in spine. 2 blank sheets + 8 unnumbered pages (including Frontispiece and Title page) + 40 unnumbered Problems pages + 6 unnumbered Solutions pages + 3 blank sheets. 16,9 x 11,3 cm. In English.

Very good to excellent: No special flaws to be noted, with only the spine very slightly faded. Covers have only marginal wear, ex-libris sticker of 2 previous owners (James E. Gates's is on top of another, of equal size, by Clarence and Katharine Southerland) on inside front cover, sticker of British Chess Problem Society on fep plus white blind stamp (of Robert C. McWilliam).

L/N 2817; Kieler Schachkatalog 7192; Betts 37-4. Betts: "One problem to each page, with diagram and source of publication. Annotated solutions appear at the end."

Rare, very scarce and extremely hard to find!! In the 33 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2021 June, only one copy was sold: lot 883 from Auction 47 of November 2005 (unfortunately it is the only Klittich Auction for which I have the Catalog but not the Price List). Also, I do not save any auction results for this book on EBAY or other auction houses on my PC.

About 2 of the former owners:

James E. Gates collected over 15,000 chess books with a value of over $210,000. He later sold his collection in 1981. Interesting link with a short biography: https://southwritlarge.com/bios/james-edwin-gates/

Robert C. McWilliam (12-07-1919 - 12-02-1997) Bob McWilliam was a British twomover composer specialized in the Schiffmann theme. He wrote about this a brochure "Schiffs with Everything", published in the "Chessays" series by G.P.Jelliss. He was a chess bibliophile.
