DESCRIPTION

"Pollock Memories: A Collection of Chess Games, Problems, etc" edited by F.F. Rowland. Published in hardback by the editor in 1899. First Edition. 159pp. Betts 29-120. The book is in Good overall condition for its age (122 years old!). The pages are tightly bound but the spine is badly cocked with resultant heavy shelf lean (see scans). Please consider this depredation before bidding. The boards have lost their embossed lettering but this can still be seen (on the front board) "in the light". There is minor superficial damage to the board edges and tips. The boards also have small areas of discolouration (see scans). Internally the book appears to have had a recent glue repair to the binding gutter as the front endpapers give that feeling. The book was previously owned by G. Wainwright (British amatuer champion, 1889) and his initials adorn the front endpaper. It appears that Wainwright started to write his full signature but was interrupted after writing 'G.E.W'. Compare this part-signature with his full signature in "St.Petersburg 1909" - also in this auction. Internally the book is in Good Plus condition for its age. The pages are clean and inscription free but nearly every game from page 1 to page 109 has either a pencil or a coloured crayon tick to it (see scan). These ticks then stop apart from one further one on page 149. There exists, of course, the distinct possibility that these ticks were made by G. Wainwright. The book is free of foxing. The page edge blocks are tanned from age. Games and positions are given in English descriptive notation. Rare. 'Signed For' postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £5.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details. PLEASE NOTE: AUCTION ITEMS WON FROM BIDDERS IN THE EU (and The USA, etc) WILL HAVE THEIR GOODS POSTED FROM THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND (part of the EU) AND THIS WILL, HOPEFULLY, AVOID THE NEW BREXIT POSTAL TAX. (N.B. Customers in the GB area will have their goods posted from Northern Ireland - part of GB - as usual). Any questions, please just ask.
