DESCRIPTION

Harald James Ruthven Murray: A Short History of Chess.

"Written by Murray in 1917 and found in typescript among his papers after his death in 1955. It is not a digest or abridgement of his standard History of Chess, first published in 1913 and reprinted in 1962, but an original work with a different approach and different aims. No attempt is made here to examine in detail the history of the Asiatic varieties of chess nor to assess the influence  of the game on European life and literature" - Publisher's note.

Murray's text trac es the history up to 1866; additional chapters by Goulding Brown and Golombek continue it to 1945 and post-1945 respectively. Includes games and positions from ancient and modern forms of chess. [Betts]

Clarendon Press, Oxford 1963. 138 pp in blue cloth with gilt print on spine. Small tear on dust jacket.

Betts 5-12. Condition: VG.
