DESCRIPTION

1933 "COMPOSIÇÕES ENXADRISTICAS"

Author's Dedication to British composer Edward Boswell

By Joaquim Valladão Monteiro

Valladão Monteiro, Joaquim: "Composições Enxadristicas".

Rio de Janeiro, Estab. Graphico CANTON & REILE, 1933. Original softback edition. 86 pages (including Title page and caricature) + Errata Sheet. 15,6 x 11,6 cm. In Portuguese. Signed by author on title page, with inscription to British composer Edward Boswell. One of the author's name cards is also attached (pasted on the Title Page, near the spine).

Good: Front cover has become unglued from spine, light edgewear at base of spine, contents clean other than author's inscription. Inside in good to very good condition.

The book contains 60 problems, mostly two-movers with a few three-movers, by the author, Brazilian chessplayer, editor and composer Joaquim Valladao Monteiro (1907-1993).

An unsolved "mystery" is the Author's date of birth, although it is true that several sites give October 15, 1907 as his date of birth. In this regard, the data provided in the following link (there is valuable and beautiful information about the Author) are interesting: https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/extra/valladaomonteiro.html .

Winter: "He was born in Rio de Janeiro, but the exact date is uncertain. Page 955 of the May-August 1993 issue of the Boletim da Uniao Brasileira de Problemistas gave 15 October 1907, but a passage quoted on page 8 of his 1933 book Composições Enxadristicas stated that he was born on the eighth day of an unspecified month."

However, in addition to this valuable information, there is another in the lower half of page 7 that has gone unnoticed, and that may be crucial in determining the date of birth:

"Faz annos no proximo sabbado, 8 do corrente, este nosso estimado amigo e collaborador."

"It will be his birthday next Saturday, the 8th of this month, our esteemed friend and collaborator."

Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator

So we must look for a Saturday 8 of 1933, and we only have 2 options, April and July (surprisingly, October does not appear as an option), as can be seen in the following link: https://www.calendario-365.es/calendario-1933.html .

If we take into account the dedication of the Author in this book, it is most likely that Joaquim Valladão Monteiro was born on April 8, 1907, since in this dedication the Author ends with "Rio 5.33".
