Chris Vlagsma (1912-1985)

Chris Vlagsma came from a working class family. His father founded a workers chess club in Rotterdam in 1918, following the example of The Hague. This was a counterpart to the elite chess clubs. Chris Vlagsma about this:

"You must be able to imagine what chess life was like in Rotterdam in those days. You had the Rotterdam Chess Society of which you could only become a member if you had a title in front of your name or could at least pay a hefty income tax bill. Then there was the NRSV. It had no ballotage, but the common man was looked down upon."

His father was the centre of a very intensive chess life. Every weekend the house was full of chess players. Chris was 7 years old at the time and was first allowed to watch and later to join. He had been a member of his father's club since 1927. At the age of 14 he played his first match in an away game against the Residentie Schaakclub from The Hague. Chris won. Chris became a strong master class player at SV Spangen, the club he remained loyal to all his life. For some years he took care of the logbook of the Hoogovens Chess Tournament together with Henny Vijgeboom. Max Euwe wrote about this: "I have noticed that the logbook keepers have done a meritorious job and become wittier and bolder by the year." Chris long had his chess column in the Rotterdams Nieuwsblad, where he did not forget to mention nice things about his club members when they performed well. Chris became a good friend of Max Euwe at an early age and was one of the few people in those days who could say "Max".

The Founders

Pim Muhring, Chris Vlagsma and Ivo Samkalden were the founders of R.S.C. Steinitz in October 1928. Ivo Samkalden became chairman because he was the only one who had a chess clock at home. H.B. Engelsman, whose father supported the club financially, soon took over the presidency and would remain so for decades.

The club also joined the Rotterdam competition and according to Vlagsma this did not go smoothly. The Rotterdam Chess Federation made quite a few demands on the "shorts club".
