DESCRIPTION

Cessolis, Jacobus de. Volgarizzamento del libro de'costumi e degli offizii de'nobili sopra il giuoco degli scacchi

Tratto nuovamente da un codice Magliabechiano. Milano, Ferrario, 1829. With a large title woodcut and 13 woodcuts in text. Interesting work based on the 1300s "Liber de moribus hominum et de officiis nobilium ac popularium super ludo saccorum" written by the Lombard Dominican Jacobus de Cessolis at the request of his monks.

It is an allegorical interpretation of chess in four main parts. First, the origin of the game is described, then the chess pieces in relation to the noble estates and the crafts and professions such as blacksmith, bricklayer, tailor, pharmacist, notary, etc. Finally, the customs and duties. A detailed script concludes the issue. This reached a wide audience over times.

The decorative woodcuts are printed on light tinted paper after the Florentine incunabulum edition of 1493. XX, 162 pages, 1 leaf. L/N 4244. v. d. Linde, supplements 123. Chicco / Sanvito, Lineamenti ..., 181. Milano 1829.

Original paperback. Some spots inside. Some wear. Corners bumped.
