DESCRIPTION

1940 "100 SAMOMATŮ"

100 Selbstmattaufgaben. 100 Problems of Selfmate

By F. J. Prokop

Prokop, F. J.: "100 SAMOMATŮ". 100 Selbstmattaufgaben. 100 Problems of Selfmate. ŠACHOVÁ KNIHOVNA F. J. PROKOPA - SVAZEK 1. Vytiskla knihtiskárna A. Lapáček v Praze.

Praze (Praha), author's self-edition and printed by Knihtiskárna Alois Lapáček, 1940. Original softback edition. 80 pages. 19 x 14 cm. In Czech, with 3-language foreword.

Good: The only relatively major flaw is the condition of the covers, especially the front cover, with some small stains and dirt and a vertical crease (folding) that crosses the entire front cover from top to bottom. Some light rubbing on the spine and on the edges of the covers, normal in this type of edition with the covers slightly larger than the inside pages. It also has a slight slant, apparently due to a slight binding error, with the last pages being (at least visually) very slightly wider than the first. Otherwise in good to very good condition inside, without writings.

Soukup 100; Mokry 74, LN 2834.

Once again, I must thank Grandmaster Karel Mokry for the detailed description below:

"The book is in Czech but foreword appears in three languages - Czech, German and English.

Follow 100 author's selfmates, of which 12 are published for the first time. These original problems have alway a „big“, full-page diagram (pic 4). The other problems have small diagrams as in picture 5. All problems are diagrammed, with date and place of first publication and solutions. Index at the end.

Frantisek Josef Prokop (1901 – 1973) was noted composer, his speciality were self-mates and endgame studies. He was a strong player, too.

Prokop wrote almost 10 chess books and this is considered as the scarcest of them."

According to different internet sources, this book published in 1940 is the 1st Volume of the "ŠACHOVÁ KNIHOVNA F. J. PROKOPA" series. Other books (all published in 1944) in this prestigious Czech series are: "212 šachových studií" (vol. 2), "1000 vybraných šachových úloh za poslednich 25 let" (vol. 3) and "Duras vítězí" (vol. 4).
