1908 "A COLLECTION OF 200 CHESS PROBLEMS"
COMPOSED BY FRANK HEALEY
DURING THE YEARS -1848 to 1904-
Healey, Percy: "A Collection of 200 Chess Problems composed by Frank Healey during the years - 1848 to 1904 -". Including positions which gained prizes in the "Era" Tournament, 1856; in the Competitions held by the British Chess Association at Manchester, 1857; Birmingham, 1858; Bristol, 1861; London, 1872; and in the London "Chess Monthly" Tournament, 1886. Selected and arranged by PERCY HEALEY (son of Frank Healey).
Stroud, "Chess Amateur" Office, 1908. Original green cloth edition. 2 blanks + 225 pages (very strange pagination because the 10 first pages are paginated with Roman numbers, and without lacking any page, continues with the page 13) + 1 blank. 18,3 x 13 cm. In English.
Very good: In general very good condition. The only important, but normal defect is that binding has suffered the usual discoloration altering the original green color in an orange color: the spine entirely, the front cover mainly on the upper edge, and the front cover somewhat more lightly on the upper part. The feeling to the touch, touching the binding is excellent, and not release any stain. All the copies of this book that I have had in my hands, and practically all the ones I have seen or known (except only 1), to a greater or lesser extent, have suffered from this discoloration, I suppose due to the pigments used by the original publisher binder, that in contact with light in long-term exposures, produce this discoloration. Ex-libris (inside front cover) from former owner, Italian collector Mr. Pellegrini. All the problems have the solution (just the initial move) written on the outside, with a pencil (easily erasable). Inside in very good condition.
L/N 2407; Betts 33-39; Kieler Schachkatalog 7238.
Betts: "10 two-movers, 127 three-movers, 45 four-movers and 18 5-movers, selected by the composer's son; with solutions (p.213-225) and a biographical introduction." In reality, it is slightly imprecise, since three-movers are 126, and four-movers are 46.
On a few occasions I have seen this book described wrongly (in my opinion) as Second Edition of the 1866, but in the 1866 the Author is Frank Healey (his son Percy was not yet born), and the most important difference is that the 1908 contains problems up to 1904, that obviously it is impossible for them to appear in that of 1866. Perhaps the virtually identical Title is confusing, although it changes slightly, since in that of 1866 "200" appears in letters (two hundred), and in that of 1908 in numbers (200).
