The English chess player and theorist J. H. Sarratt (d. 1821) was a teacher in London and translated the great work into English. He was considered one of the most witty and strongest players in England of his time. Horatio Gianutio's work was first published in Italian in 1597. Gustavus Selenus, pseudonym for Duke August II, wrote the first German textbook on chess.
