Author's Preface (1971): This monograph is the most elaborate treatment of the theory of the Marshall gambit in the Tarrasch defense that has been published so far. It is the result of many years of interest in the various variants of the Tarrasch defense. The first manuscript was ready about three years ago, before Spassky's great success in the 1969 Wch-match gave the Tarrasch defense a renaissance.
