Philidor, (André Danican). Analysis of the game of chess.

A new edition, improved and greatly enlarged. To which is added, several parties, played by the author blindfold, against three adversaries. 2 parts in one volume. London, Elmsly, 1790. IX, 1 vol, 223 pages, 2 vol, 183 pages. L/N 491; van der Linde I, 404. Schmid, p. 272.

Philidor (1726 - 1795) was the greatest chess master of the 18th century. Already in 1749 his work "L'Analysis du jeu des Echecs" was published with his chess strategy. Its contents are still of great importance today, it was a groundbreaking work. Philidor's sentence "The pawns are the soul of chess..." became legendary. The first part of the present edition is a new edition of the 1749 and 1777 editions. The second part contains new openings and endgames as well as instructions for blindfold play.

Condition: Bound in contemporary full leather. Some minor defects to spine. Inside, some spots. Paper is creased and yellowe.
