DESCRIPTION

"32 PERSONAGGI E 1 AUTORE" by Luigi Ceriani

1st 1955 LIMITED EDITION OF ONLY 200 COPIES

Author's Gift to the Family of Thomas Rayner Dawson

VERY RARE AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND

Ceriani, Luigi: "32 PERSONAGGI E 1 AUTORE". STUDI sul PROBLEMA di SCACCHI del Dr.ING. LUIGI CERIANI.

Milano, self-published, 1955. Original publisher blue linen hardback edition without prints. Frontispiece with the Ceriani's Portrait + 656 pages (including Title page) + 1 unnumbered page (a kind of Frontispiece of the last page 656). 25 x 17,5 cm. In Italian. This is the original 1955 hardcover 1st Edition, not the 1982 paperback reprint.

On page 654 the data of the Limited Edition appears:

"La matrice originale di questo volume, litografato in sole 200 copie, è stata dattiloscritta da me che ne ò fatto pure i diagrammi, gradevole fatica che mi à permesso di ridurre il costo del libro e il tempo necessario per compilarlo."

"The original matrix of this volume, lithographed in only 200 copies, was typed by me who also made the diagrams, a pleasant effort that allowed me to reduce the cost of book and the time it takes to complete it." (Google Translator)

Good: Lightly soiled covers. Inked title and number on front cover and spine, BCPS (British Chess Problem Society) in ink on inside front cover together with an inscription "Sent to L.D. and D.R. Dawson by the author Feb 1957". Cracked inner front hinge, pages tanned at edges. Inside in good to very good condition, without writings.

Regarding the inscription of BCPS, according to the previous owner it was: "Sent to L.D. and T.R. Dawson by the author Feb 1954". The text clearly contains 2 errors:

1- If the book was published in 1955, the shipment could not have been in 1954, so seeing the spelling of the year, the most reasonable option is 1957, and I sincerely believe that it is more similar to a "7" than to a " 4".

2- The shipment of the book could not be to T.R. Dawson (Thomas Rayner Dawson), since he died in 1951. In the link, https://mannchess.org.uk/People/Dawson,%20Thomas%20Rayner.htm, the following text appears: "Administration of his estate, with will, was granted to Louisa Dust Dawson, widow, and Dorothy Rayner Dawson, spinster. He left effects of £5,203 7s.". Looking at this information, it is certain that, in the inscription of the BCPS, L.D. Dawson is Louisa Dust Dawson (widow) and D.R. Dawson is Dorothy Rayner Dawson (almost certainly the daughter of Thomas Rayner Dawson, although I haven't been able to confirm this 100% online), and I sincerely believe that the first initial letter of the 2nd name has absolute resemblance to a "D" and not a "T".

Sanvito 767; Kieler Schachkatalog 7187.

Curiously, Sanvito mentions that the reprint is from 1983. However, in the photos of the Auction 59 of KLITTICH - PFANKUCH (June 2011), 1982 is clearly seen in front cover, in addition to mentioning in the description that it is a paperback.

Luigi Ceriani's monumental work on Retrograde Analysis, largely "autobiographical", since an important part of the 448 problems (many unpublished) that appear in the book are by Ceriani.

Luigi Ceriani (23-01-1894 – 08-10-1969) Italian composer

Luigi Ceriani is renowned for his retro problems and for the theme that wears his name, but he also composed selfmates or directmates. More than 600 of his problems can be seen on the Chess Problem Database Server.
Readers may consult online Nikita Plaksin and Igor Vereshchagin's article about Luigi Ceriani's retro works in Best Problems : the article can be seen here.
Luigi Ceriani also wrote two books, "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore" (1955) and "La genesi delle posizioni" (1961), about chess retroanalysis.
