DESCRIPTION

1873 "CHESS PROBLEMS"

By James Pierce and W. Timbrell Pierce

Probably the rarest book by J. Pierce and W. Timbrell Pierce

Pierce, James and Pierce, W. Timbrell: "CHESS PROBLEMS". By James Pierce, M.A. and W. Timbrell Pierce, Author of "Descriptive Geometry."

London, Longmans, Green and Co., 1873. Original publisher dark green cloth edition, with gold embossed Title in spine. Frontispiece + XII (including Title page) + 381 pages + 2 unnumbered publisher pages. Pagination jumps from X to XII in the subscriber list, so the "real" XI appears as "XII", and the "real" XII appears unnumbered. 18,5 x 13,3 cm. In English.

On the inside of the front cover there is a "label" (with a nice story. See below) affixed with the following text:

"WEST YORKSHIRE CHESS ASSOCIATION

HUDDERSFIELD MEETING, MAY 16th, 1874

PRESIDENT: JOHN WATKINSON.

Prize in a Match between the Leeds and Wakefield Chess Clubs,

won by W.L. Robinson

Wakefield

Edwin Dyson

Hon. Secr."

Being honest, I cannot distinguish all the letters with total clarity, but on the Internet I have located the following 2 links, which clear all doubts: https://mannchess.org.uk/People/Robinson,%20William%20Ledgar.htm and https://mannchess.org.uk/Events/1874%20Wakefield-Leeds.htm.

In the 1st of them appears an excellent biographical review of William Ledgar Robinson (W.L. Robinson), the player who received this book as a prize for his team's victory in the Match.

In the 3rd paragraph of the 2nd link the following is mentioned: "The reports differed slightly. One might think that, as the HCM chess-editor, John Watkinson, was present at the meeting as president, he’d get the details correct, but maybe he was relying on secretary Edwin Dyson, who was probably not so knowledgeable." And after the game of the article, the following is mentioned:

"The players in the winning Wakefield team all received prizes, as follows:

Young a volume of "Chess World"

Day a volume of "Chess World"

Robinson "Chess Problems" by Pierce

Marks "Morphy’s Games"

Elliott "London & Edinburgh Matches" by Lewis

Grace "Chess Brilliants" by Howard"

Good to very good: Binding slightly rubbed on the edges and spine, and the corners sligthly beaten. Light traces, perhaps of moisture, on the lower margin of the covers (although it does not affect anything inside), and very lightly on the side and spine edges, as well as 2 small white streaks (perhaps chalk-like) on the lower outer corner of the front cover. Some foxing on the safeguards. Interior in excellent condition, without writings, and with only 3 or 4 pages with small stains.

L/N 2421; Betts 33-64: "302 problems by both authors, comprising 22 two-movers, 143 three-movers, 91 four-movers, 19 five-movers, 9 others and 18 end-game studies. Solutions appear on p.305-380)." BETTS.

Inside there are 300 Problems numbered 1-208 and CCIX-CCC. If we add the Frontispiece Problem and the Selfmate by H.F.L. Meyer (page 301), this gives us the 302 Problems mentioned by Betts.
