DESCRIPTION

1890 "VIELZÜGIGE SCHACHAUFGABEN"

By Otto T. Bláthy

With Author's handwritten letter signed to Dr. Niemeyer

VERY RARE AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND

Bláthy, Dr. Otto Titusz: "Vielzügige Schachaufgaben" von OTTO T. BLÁTHY. Zweite, vermehrte Auflage.

Leipzig, Verlag von Veit & Comp., 1890. Original publisher softback edition. 82 pages (including Title page) + 2 unnumbered publisher pages. 20,6 x 13,6 cm. In German.

BONUS:

1- Diptych of the "Grand Hotel Hungaria Budapest" containing a handwritten letter signed by Dr. BLÁTHY, dated January 23, 1932. As a curious detail, it is worth mentioning that Dr. Bláthy dates the publication of the book of this auction in 1891. Mistake, or perhaps the book was published in 1891, even though 1890 appears on the Title Page?

2- Receipt for a Postgiro payment of 1,5 Dutch guilder, from Niemeyer for Blathy, dated April 27, 1942. The date is visible in the punched holes at the bottom of the Receipt.

I do not fully understand Bláthy's handwriting, but I am relatively sure that I have understood enough. The history of these 3 documents (letter, receipt and book) seems to be as follows: in 1932 Bláthy writes (almost certainly in reply to an earlier letter from Niemejer) to Niemejer (his name does not appear on the letter, but the receipt alone makes it reasonable that the letter is addressed to Niemejer), indicating that he no longer has any copies available, only his own, and that it may be possible to get a copy through Hans Hedewig or Kagan. And it seems that it is not until 1942 that Niemejer is able to find the book. Fortunately for Niemejer in April 1942 he manages to buy it. It is very striking that Niemejer, despite his contacts, after Bláthy's letter, took more than 10 years to find it, and before the letter, surely some more. And he decides to keep the book together with the Receipt, and especially with Bláthy's letter, with his beautiful signature. So if the above story is true, it is almost certain that this copy belonged to Dr. Niemejer.

Fair: The condition of the covers is visible: poor. However the interior is in good condition. So it is a perfect copy to give it the beautiful binding that such a rare book deserves, and being such a special copy with such a pedigree.

L/N 2488; Kieler Schachkatalog 6637.

This book is devoted to mate problems with long sequences of very many moves. Problem 50 reaches mate after 292 moves, although on page 82 there is an "improved" version reaching mate after 345 moves!!

While the 1st Edition has only 40 pages containing 26 Problems, the 2nd Edition with 82 pages contains 50 Problems, as well as correcting some incorrect solutions from the 1st Edition.

In the next link it is possible to see an original scanned copy of the Budapest 1st Edition of 1889:

Never in my life have I seen this book ("2nd" Ed.) up for auction. In the 35 editions of the Klittich-Pfankuch Auktion that I know, 2003 November - 2006 June, and 2008 November - 2022 June, a copy of this book was never auctioned.

And the 1st Edition, in Klittich, I only saw it for sale once (67. Auktion - November 2014) and it was sold for 307,63 EUR (taxes included).

Ottó Titusz Bláthy was a successful Hungarian Electrical Engineer. Besides his scientific work, Bláthy is well known as an author of chess problems. He specialized in the field of very long moremovers, also known as longmovers:
