DESCRIPTION

"Chess Fundamentals" by J.R. Capablanca. Published in hardback by Bell and Sons in 1922. Second UK Edition. 246 + ix pages. Betts 11-24. Includes flatsigned autograph of the author on the title page. The book is in Good Plus condition for its age (exactly 100 years old!). The binding is tight and there is no shelf lean or bowing present. The page edge blocks are evenly tanned from age and the long edge has very mild evidence of foxing (see scan). The original red boards are clean. The gilt lettering on the front board is still strong whereas the gilt lettering on the spine has faded but is still very readable. There is a prize presentation sticker on the front endpaper dated 1922. The Capablanca signature is affixed to the gutter of the book with the remainder of the piece of paper hanging free so it could, if any new owner wanted to, be removed and placed in another book. The signature is in nicely age faded fountain pen ink and includes the date of "Aug 22/936". Capablanca had a habit of abbreviating the date to omit the century - see, for example, his 1927 letter of resignation to Alekhine which is easily found on the internet. Just below the date there is a tiny smudge which might be dried fountain pen ink. The piece of paper also has mild wavy creases to its top as though liquid once affected it but this, as you can see, does not affect the clarity of the Capablanca signature. The date of Aug 22nd 1936 is significant as Capablanca was participating in the great Nottingham 1936 tournament between Aug 10th - Aug 28th and played a quick draw with Euwe on the 22nd. The remainder of the book is clean and annotation free. The dustjacket is in Good Minus condition. There has been a neat camauflage repair undertaken to the head (and a tiny area of the tail) of the spine where approx.60 mm of the spine is missing and has been replaced with a similar coloured heavy duty paper (see scans). The title lettering of the book on the dustjacket has been lost but, as can be seen from the scanned images, the remainder of the dustjacket is in tact with creases and mild scuffing to note. The dustjacket is now protected by a removable see-through sleeve and is itself a rarity given the age of the book's publication. Scarce. Further scanned images are available on request. 'Signed For' postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £5.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details. PLEASE NOTE: AUCTION ITEMS WON FROM BIDDERS IN THE EU (and The USA, etc) WILL HAVE THEIR GOODS POSTED FROM THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND (part of the EU) AND THIS WILL, HOPEFULLY, AVOID THE NEW BREXIT POSTAL TAX. (N.B. Customers in the GB area will have their goods posted from Northern Ireland - part of GB - as usual). Any questions, please just ask.
