DESCRIPTION

Murray, Harold James Ruthven. A History of Chess. Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1913. In English. 900 pages. Original blue cloth, gilt title and design. Weight 2,1 kg. LN 264. Betts 5 - 6.

A monumental work on chess history from the beginning to the late 19th century. Harold J. R. Murray (1868 - 1955) summarised the research of his predecessors and worked a comprehensive collection of source material on Persian, Arabic and mediaeval chess history into his explanations.

The book is from the library of well known chess problemist, author of 6440 problems and father of "Fairy Chess" Thomas Rayner Dawson (1889 - 1951) with his signature on endpaper. He also notes that he received this copy from fellow chess problemist H. D. Benjamin, whose signature is also there.

Condition - Still Good: worming to front board and first 100 pages, repair to gutter at title page, binding a bit shaken, but secure, wear to cloth at spine ends and edges, unmarked text.
