DESCRIPTION

"ALBIN'S SCHACH-APHORISMEN UND REMINISCENZEN"

RARE EDITION

In German by Adolph Albin (Hannover 1899)

Albin, Adolph: Schach-Aphorisme und Reminiscenzen von Adolph Albin.

Hannover, Selbstverlag, (1899). Original dark red cloth edition with blind embossed chessboard on the front cover and gold embossed Title. Albin portrait with tissue guard sheet + 4 unnumbered leaves + 112 pages. 17,5 x 12 cm. In German.

Fair to good: Binding rubbed and very lightly soiled. General browning throughout the book, with the outer edge of the pages dark. Some small stain, as in the safeguards, more visible in the front, on the outer side of the portrait, or on some inner page such as pages 94-97. Very slight cracking before page 1, and between pages 16-17, 32-33, 48-49, 64-65 and 96-97. Large wrinkle on the outer side of pages 59-60, with some tears but no loss of paper. In the lower outer corner of page 21 there is an imprinted stamp that appears to be, most likely, the Author's. Otherwise a decent copy in good condition.

L/N 4278; Kieler Schachkatalog 1856.

The Romanian Master and theorist A. Albin (1847-1920) had some strong performances at tournaments, and introduced the Countergambit named after him in the tournament practice in the period around 1890. The present edition includes entertaining chess - aphorisms, some tournament games by Albin (including the tournaments in Dresden 1892, New York 1893, Hastings 1895), the "Schachcomödie to Nuremberg" and end positions.
