"20 Grote Denkers" by Peter van Foreest. Published in hardback by M. Stenvert & Son in 1946. First Edition. L/N: 5679. 128pp. The book of the first major chess tournament after WW2: "Groningen, 1946". In Dutch language and algebraic notation. The book is in Very Good condition for its age. The binding is tight and there is no shelf lean or bowing present. The boards are very clean. The page edge block is heavily tanned but this appears to be from the poorer quality of paper available so soon after the war than from handling. Internally the book is inscription and foxing free although a previous owner has added some very light comments in pen on a couple of pages (see scans). As stated, the quality of paper was poor by modern standards and this is reflected in the internal pages which have tanned but not too badly. The - scarce - dustjacket is in Good condition. It has severe fading along the spine area and loss to the head of the spine (see scans). There are also tiny chips to extremities and a short closed tear on the rear panel (which has some unsightly speckled staining on, see scans). The dustjacket is now protected by a removable see-through sleeve. Quite a scarce volume on this important chess event, won by Botvinnik from Euwe, Smyslov, etc. The book has small cartoons of the participants with facsimile signatures alongside. Further scanned images are available on request. Uninsured postage by Royal Mail within the UK is £3.00. Airmail postage to Europe and elsewhere will be extra - please ask me for details.
