DESCRIPTION

Unfinished letter written by Akiba Rubinstein to Gerard Zitterstein, dated May 30, 1930. The letter comes from the estate of Akiba Rubinstein, which was in the collection of a Jewish diamond merchant in Antwerp. It is written in German on the original letterhead, inscribed in the upper left corner:

AKIBA RUBINSTEIN

MAITRE D'ECHECS

4, RUE MME COURTMANS, 4

BERCHEM - ANVERS

The text of the letter is:

“Sehr geehrter Herr Zitterstein!

Ihre werte Einladung nach Holland habe ich erhalten, besten Dank. Nach Ihrem Briefe nach, soll das Turnier den ersten Juni” (the next word should probably be “beginnen”)

In Englisch:

Dear Mr. Zitterstein!

I have received your invitation to Holland, thank you very much. According to your letter, the tournament will begin the first of June.

This is certainly an original manuscript of Akiba Rubinstein with his typical capital I and S known from his other manuscripts.

Akiba Rubinstein (1880 - 1961) is one of the most iconic figures in chess history and one of the strongest players to never become a world champion. According to the historical chess ratings calculations (Chessmetrics), Rubinstein was even world number one in 25 different months between 1908 and 1914. He had an arranged match with Emanuel Lasker for the title in 1914, but due to the outbreak of World War I it did not take place. After 1931 he withdrew from tournaments due to a mental disorder.

Gerard Zittersteyn (1882 - 1956) was a strong player from the Dutch chess club Discendo Discimus, The Hague. He run a chess column in "Het Vaderland" from 1920 until 1932. In 1938 he became chairman of the Dutch Chess Federation K.N.S.B. He held this position until 1948, with a break during 1943-45. (source)

Condition - Still Good: folded and with a few tears at the edges.
