19th Czechoslovak championship

Very good: light signs of use, stamp of the tournament on the back.

Pachman won the tournament ahead of Katetov, Foltys, Opocensky, Zita, Rohacek etc. 15 players round robin.

From the left:

Rada (organization), Louma, Thelen(?), Potucek, ???, Fichtl (in the corner), Foltys, ???, ???, Tikovsky, Opocensky, Pachman (the winner), Straka (organization), Zita, Rohacek, Katetov, Runza, Liska.

Biographical data of some players:

Josef Louma (1898-1955), strong Czech master, FIDE vicepresident 1951-54, journalist (Ceskoslovensky sach etc), chess composer - author of some 60 endgame studies.

Ludovit Potucek (1912-1982), Slovak master, chess author (Sachova příručka 1943 etc).

Jiri Fichtl (1922-2003), Czech IM, one of the best Czechoslovak players in 1950s-60s, 2x Czechoslovak champion. In 1954-1962, he played in 5 olympiads.

Jan Foltys (1908-1952), IM, one of the best Czech players in 1930s and 1940s. Czech champion in 1940 and 1943, he played three times in the Olympiads (1936, 1937, 1939), his greatest success was probably the third place in Podebrady 1936 (after Flohr and Alekhine), he came third in Prague 1942 (1.-2. Alekhine, Junge).

Karel Opocensky (1892-1975), strong chess master, author of several books. His best years were 1920s and 1930s: 4 times Czechoslovak champion (1927, 1929, 1938, 1944). He took part in chess olympiads 1931, 1933, 1935 and 1939. At the 1933 chess olympiad made Opocensky 12,5 points of 14 and helped considerably to the 2nd place of the Czechoslovak team.

Ludek Pachman (1924-2003), Czech GM, in 1940s and 1950s the best Czechoslovak player together with M. Filip, 7x Czechoslovak champion, German champion. He took part on many chess olympiads. Chess writer and theoretician. He won 2 games against Bobby Fischer in 1959.

Frantisek Zita (1909-1977), Czech IM, 2x co-winner of Czech(oslovak) championship, multiple winner of Prague chess championship. Zita was strong positional player, took part in 5 chess olympiads.

Ivan Vladimir Rohacek (1909-1977), 3x Slovak champion in 1930, 1936, 1939.

Miroslav Katetov (1918-1995), Prague champion 1942 and 1946, one of the strongest Czech players in 1940s. In 1953-1957 he was rector of Charles University.

Vendelin Runza, (1893-1952), Czech master from Prague.
