by Harrie Grondijs, Maastricht 2021
Published 29 numbered/signed copies
This is number 13
Grondijs, Harrie / van Zutphen, Rieneke (ed): Scarcest of the rarities. The Philidorian, Charleston, S.C.
(Maastricht), De Groene Loper, 2021. Orig. hardcover. 40, (24) pages, many color + b/w illustrations. Limited edition of 29 numbered copies, signed by the author. This is copy no. 13. Size 25.5 cm. 320 grams. In English.
Fine condition: new book.
In 1859, The Pilidorian (not to be confused with the 1838 magazine of the same name) was published in Charleston, SC. Only two issues were published. The last known original copy of the magazine was lost in 1885, when J. G. White sent it to Europe to Tassilo von der Lasa. Since then, no original copy of the magazine has appeared.
Fortunately, J. G. White made photocopies from the original in 1884. There were 22 of these photocopies in all. Harrie Grondijs states that six of these photocopies can be located today.
In the book, Harrie Grondijs describes the history of the magazine in detail, and also provides a facsimile of the entire magazine.
