With a handwritten dedication by the North American grandmaster Frank James Marshall (1877 - 1944) on the endpaper: "Jan. 20 1913, kind remembrances to Harold M. Philips from from Frank J. Marshall. author."
Marshall was one of the most successful chess masters at the beginning of the 20th century. in Cambridge 1904 and Nuremberg 1906 tournament winner. He was considered a feared attacking player and surprised with unconventional moves. "The author analyzes some of his favorite lines in answer to 1. P-K4. The basic defense recommended is the Petroff, with additional analysis of the lines by which white avoids the Petroff (Three Knights' Game, Max Lange, and other) ." (Betts)
