DESCRIPTION

"THE CHESS TOURNAMENT"

1851 LONDON

By H. STAUNTON (1873) 2nd Edition (reprint)

Staunton, H.: "THE CHESS TOURNAMENT." A collection of the games played at this celebrated assemblage, illustrated by copious diagrams, and notes, critical and explanatory. By H. STAUNTON, Esq. Author of "The Handbook of Chess", "Chess-Player's Companion", &c. &c. &c.

London, Bell & Daldy, 1873. Private half cloth binding without printing. Half Title page + pages 1-6 (including Title page and Errata) + X-LXCI + 377 pages + 1 blank page + 24 publisher pages. 18,3 x 11,9 cm. In English.

Notes on pagination:

1- A curious aspect, which I have never seen mentioned, is that pages 7-8 (or VII-VIII) seem to be missing, although I have confirmed that the book is complete. Probably, when going from page 6 to IX, they also added the leaf of the Half Title page. It is true that I have just discovered that in lot 1230 of Klittich Auction 79 they mention that pages VII-VIII are missing, being a copy with the original binding. Perhaps such pages exist (if so, it would probably be a blank page), but so far all the copies that I have examined on the Internet or with my own hands, all without exception, go from the Errata page (the unnumbered page VI) to the Introduction page (unnumbered page IX).

2- The 1st Ed. at most has 32 publisher pages at the end, though I know some copies that have fewer or none, even with the original binding. Regarding the 2nd Ed., despite being practically a reprint, it only has 24 and it is complete, since they finish with the printer's data, and also on page 23 it mentions a newspaper article from October 1873 from the "Quarterly Review".

Very good: It only has minor defects, such as the few stamps (I think only 2, one on the Title Page and the other on page 17) and annotations in ink (these, only on the one on the spine or on the Title Page) of an Icelandic library or bookstore. It also has a minuscule circular stain on the outer side edge of the back cover. Also, some of the last 24 pages of the publisher have a binding cut that is too tight on the outer side. Otherwise a copy in very good to excellent condition.

L/N 5180; Betts 25-1; Di Felice 1161.6 (Chess Competitions 1824-1970).

Betts: "Contains a full account of the first chess tournament, including the preliminary negotiations, followed by 70 games with brief notes. (1.Anderssen;2.Wyvill;3.Williams)".
