Complete volume of a rare Hungarian magazine
(all published)
Magyar sakkujsag 1897.
Nagyvarad, 1897. Contemporary halfcloth with no lettering. 256 pages. Size ca 24 cm. 620 grams. In Hungarian. LN 6162 (only issues 1-6), Di Felice 1408.
Good or better: binding is OK with light edge wear. Internally OK with no writings: light general signs of use, page 241 a little soiled. Page 256 (the last page, picture) is somewhat soiled, with ca 2-cm repair at the bottom.
Complete volume, numbers 1-9 (January-September) 1897. Number 9 is the last issue of the magazine. Title and contents pages have not been published. Nor any plates. The covers are not bound in.
One of the first Hungarian chess magazines, it practically does not appear on the market. It has never been offered in LSAK and Klittich-Pfankuch auctions.
In the LN collection there were only numbers 1-6. At present, the library in The Hague has all 9 issues, but issues 7-9 are only in photocopy.
The volume contains articles, news, crosstables, 124 (mostly annotated) games, 111 problems and 36 endgames or endgame studies.
According to the Internet translator, the text on the last page of the magazine (see picture) means:
In view of the fact that the interest and support shown by Hungarian chess lovers for our company is so insignificant that it does not at all guarantee the existence of the Magyar sakkujsag, nor even cover half of the printing costs, I regret to inform you that the continuation of the journal can only be published if the required number of subscribers have paid by the beginning of December. And if this does not happen, then our respected readers who have prenumbered for 3/4 years will get back the rest of their money in the most convenient way.
The magazine with the same name was published in 1911-1913. All three volumes are offered in another auction.
