Greco was the strongest chess master of the 17th century, born around 1600 in Calabria and died in 1634 in the Antilles. He invented "magnificent" game combinations that are still known today (Greco's Sacrifice - Greco's Mate). Greco was often able to demonstrate his art through faulty play by his opponents. His chess book was only available as a manuscript, the first English translation appeared in 1656 and was subsequently printed in many languages over the centuries. "This work is indisputably one of the most excellent and at the same time most instructive works on the game of chess. It contains about 150 extremely witty ... games without annotations ... The conclusion is formed by 6 endgames ..." (Schmid) 

Condition: Private binding. Brown leather binding with faded gilt to spine. Binding is worn.
