"DEUTSCHES WOCHENSCHACH"
COMPLETE 11. JAHRGANG 1895
VERY SCARCE PUBLISHER'S BINDING!!
Heyde, Albert; Hülsen, B.; and Ranneforth, H. (Ed. together):
"Deutsches Wochenschach". Elfter Jahrgang 1895. Unter Mitwirkung von Dr. Siegbert Tarrasch herausgegeben von Albert Heyde, B. Hülsen, und H. Ranneforth.
Berlin, Verlag von W. T. Bruer, 1895. Publisher's original green linen binding with embossing and gilt title on front cover and spine. Title page missing (supplied in photocopy) + 460 pages (Index in pages 445-460) + 3 sheets with 5 Portraits (Dr. Max Lange after page 4, Albert Heyde after page 214, and John Bierbach, Oskar Löbbecke and Emil Hoffmeister together in one sheet after page 216. On many occasions some are missing). 22,5 x 16,2. In German.
The binding deserves a separate comment. On the one hand, the magazine began to be called "Deutsches Wochenschach und Berliner Schachzeitung" in the year 1898, and although this Volume is from the year 1895 (3 years earlier), the name born in 1898 appears on the front cover. On the other hand, the magazine began to be published by A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung, Potsdam, in 1900, and although this Volume is from the year 1895 (5 years earlier), in the lower part of the front cover the "new" publishing data from 1900 clearly appears, although with a curious mix between Berlin (Verlag von W. T. Bruer, or perhaps it is from the time when A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung management changed to Berlin-Halensee, in 1917, which would imply that binding of the old Years did not begin until 1917. I guess it's more likely a reference to Bruer's time) and Potsdam (A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung). Perhaps these 2 curiosities could be due to the fact that with A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung the magazine began to be available in the publisher's binding, and A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung binds previous years with the new binding. And for this reason, it may be difficult to find years prior to 1900 with a publisher's binding and a Title Page. Although the early years of the magazine are extremely hard to find with the publisher's binding. Comment that I have seen the publisher's binding in green and also in red, although I cannot guarantee that both colors were available for all years (at least, from 1901, there are also bindings in dark green and also orange, according to the Klittich-Pfankuch Auction Catalog 56 of November 2009). The year 1895 did have the 2 colors for the binding (green and red), since the copy (lot 1474) from Klittich-Pfankuch Auction 56 (November 2009) is described as "Originaler roter illustrierter Leinenband" and also has the Title Page. Its Hammer Price was 360 EUR (including taxes EUR 442,98 EUR).
Good to very good: Binding slightly rubbed, more visible on the edges and mainly on the spine, with some slight stain (the only really visible is a small one in the center of the back cover). Slightly tilted binding. Inside some foxing, and very few notations (I've barely seen a couple very light, or marked as an "x" or similar), although nothing especially important. The portrait of Max Lange with a slight tear in its lower outer corner, but complete. Curious small loose leaf with annotations referring to game 1704. Light browning inside, with little foxing, some light wrinkle, but in very good condition for his age.
