"HERBARIUM" 1930-1970
SJAKKPROBLEM
By DAVID HJELLE
Hjelle, David: "HERBARIUM", 1930-1970 (on front cover). David Hjelle Sjakk-Problem.
Volda, self-published, 1970. Original softback edition. 103 pages. 21,2 x 14,8 cm. In Norwegian, although the Portrait Gallery is in English and the text that accompanies the drawings is in both languages.
Honestly, I'm not 100% sure of the Title of the book, as the Title Page seems to indicate that it is "David Hjelle Sjakk-Problem", although in most sources, such as the British Chess Problem Society (https://theproblemist. org/dloads/libcat.txt) or Tidskrift för Schack (page 31 of Number 1 of 1971: https://tfsarkiv.schack.se/pdf/1971/tfs_1971_01.pdf) mention "Herbarium 1930-1970" as Title. On the other hand, in the following website https://www.nb.no/items/4a8e871be5fa07a972803ef1d7f3468f they give as Title "Sjakk-Problem". And finally, and perhaps most importantly, in the Preface (page 2) and in the Epilogue (page 103) the Author refers to the book as "HERBARIUM", so I am inclined to think that this was the title the Author really wanted to give to the book, which seems to indicate the impression of the spine. The Title "HERBARIUM" appears in the middle of page 1 of the following link: http://sjakkselskapet.no/hist/problem/problem_sjak_i_OSS.PDF
Very good: Minor defects such as slight discolouration of the spine, a few light wrinkles in the upper corners, a couple of corrections in blue ink on page 6 and very light annotation in blue ink on page 27. Otherwise in very good to excellent condition.
David Hjelle's first Problem appeared in 1925, and throughout his life he composed nearly 900 Problems. The book contains 433 problems composed by David Hjelle (the last 8 original, unpublished), the vast majority two-movers (407 to be relatively exact), although 18 are three-movers (Problems 6, 17, 18, 131, 159 -160, 162-163, 212-213, 250-251, 296, 329, 336-337, 349 and 356), 2 are four-movers (Problems 5 and 338), 4 are questions about whether Black is in Mate in the position of the diagram (Problems 290-291, 396 and 397) and 2 are two-movers (Problems 292 and 389) but in reality they are double, since they have 2 solutions (one with the position of the diagram and another in which one piece changes its position). So we can tell that the book actually contains 411 two-movers. Although it actually contains 421 two-movers, since on page 101 there are 10 Problems (numbered A-J) composed jointly with other Composers, between the years 1945-1968.
An absolutely beautiful book, with a fairly manual production method. It is very reminiscent of Cyrano's "Chess Tattoo" series, so perhaps "HERBARIUM" (being earlier) was its inspiration (Cyrano is the alias of Steffen Helweg, famous Danish chess problemist).
