DESCRIPTION

1999 "IZIDOR GROSS i šah u Karlovcu"

History of Chess in Karlovac from 1844 to 1999

VERY RARE AND EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND!!

Švegar, Zdravko: "IZIDOR GROSS i šah u Karlovcu".

Karlovac-Zagreb, Karlovački šahovski klub (Karlovac) and ITG d.o.o. (Zagreb), 1999. Original softback edition. 169 pages + 4 unnumbered advertising pages. 26 x 20 cm. In Croatian.

Very good: It is only worth noting some wrinkles on the edges and in the corners, more visible on the covers. Otherwise inside in very good condition without writings.

Spectacular book about the History of Chess in the city of Karlovac, dedicating a well-deserved tribute to the great Chess Player Izidor Gross, who did so much for Chess in Croatia and especially in Karlovac. The 10 photographs are not even a third of the photographic content of the first 60 pages. And the book has 169 pages!! Although the photos are not of excellent quality, the photographic report (also of problems, cartoons...) is spectacular!!

Translation from various Wikipedia sources:

"Izidor Gross was born on June 25, 1860 in Kislőd, Hungary, then part of Austria-Hungary. In 1891, Gross moved to Karlovac (Croatia). In Karlovac, he served as a cantor (hazzan) in the Karlovac Synagogue. In addition to working in the "Jewish Municipality of Karlovac", Gross was a top chess player and a respected author of books on chess and problem chess. In 1908 , Gross co-founded and was the president of the "Karlovac Chess Club". In 1912 , he co-founded the "Croatian Chess Association". He published articles on problem chess in various foreign and domestic magazines-newspapers. In 1909 published "Chess Alphabet", the first Croatian chess book. In 1912, Gross successfully organized, in Karlovac, the first international chess tournament in the Balkans and in Croatia (independent of today's territory). During the Holocaust, Izidor Gross, as a Jew, was arrested and deported to the Jasenovac concentration camp. He was killed in Jasenovac in 1942, together with his son Herman and daughter-in-law Julija."

The book is divided into 2 large chapters: the 1st dedicated to the years 1844-1944 (pages 9-68) and the 2nd dedicated to the years 1945-1999 (pages 69-157), and finally a Summary and Indexes. History, photos, biographies, games, results and Cross-Tables, problems.... An absolutely beautiful book.
