DESCRIPTION

Praha 1952 chess tournament

organized by chess club Aljechin Praha

to the 30th anniversary of its founding

the photo from the “B” section

size 18 x 13 cm

(was published in Ceskoslovensky sach 1953, p.37)

Fair: the bottom corner about 0.5 x 0.5 cm is torn off. Otherwise light/some general signs of use, some writings on the back

The photo is from the group “B” of the tournament, which was organized by chess club Aljechin Praha to 30th anniversary of its founding in November 1952. After communist putsch in February 1948, the club was renamed and in time of the tournament it had a strange name: „Chess club Aljechin – CKD Stalingrad Praha“.

The photo as well as the article about the tournament can be found in the magazine Ceskoslovensky sach 1953, page 3 and on.

I am familiar with two players in the photo:

Sitting second from the right is Evzen Gonsior (1931-2022),

Standing Jiří Vesely (he played in the “A” group) is watching the games.

Biographical data:

Evzen Gonsior (1931-2022), a strong master, respected teacher and coach.

Jiri Vesely (1932-2009), Czech master, member of Czechoslovak team, which won the first World Student championship in Oslo 1954 - Vesely scored 5,5 points of 7 games. Noted chess writer, journalist, author of several books, some of which became bestsellers. Germanist, Professor of the Charles University in Prague.
