Philidor: (William Blagrove, Editor): The Elements of Chess; A Treatise Combining Theory with Practice, and Comprising the Whole of Philidor's Games, and Explanatory Notes, New Modelled; and Arranged upon an Original Plan. Printed for W.Pelham, No.59 Cornhill, Boston, 1805. First and Only Edition.
Contemporary leather with a new antique-style spine, red title-label, gilt ruling, a nice binding. Folding engraved frontispiece, pp 208. There is heavy browning to most pages but the text is still readable.
In the 8 page Appendix the editor proposes a complete revolution in the nomenclature of the game, "more descriptive of its military character; and better adapted to our feelings as citizens of a free republic." Eg. Governor for King, General for Queen, First Major for King's Bishop, Pioneer for Pawn etc.
Hagedorn, Benjamin Franklin and Chess in Early America, No.2 - "This work was probably edited by William Blagrove, a nephew of the publisher, and an enthusiastic amateur. This is the first original American book on the game of chess (and second published in America on chess). It has become very rare."
