Large quarto (24 x 30cm) bound in later imitation brown leather, a faint vertical centre fold to pages otherwise VG. p.203-291 (= 89 pages). A few pencil notes in margins. A paper read before the Society of Antiquaries, 16th February 1832. Includes 51 illustrations in text and 4 plates of the Lewis chessmen. Describes in detail the Lewis chessmen which were discovered in 1831. An important and scarce item. Sir Frederic Madden was Keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum and one of the best palaeographers of his day. Whyld 1832:6. LN 196.
