Original group photo from the tournament in Novi Sad 1957. The tournament is almost unknown (it does not appear in the databases). The only mention I found is in Ceskoslovensky sach 1957/12 on page 182 in an article by one of the participants Frantisek Pithart. Size 14,5 x 10 cm.
Tournament standings published in Ceskoslovensky sach
I can identify three players in the photo: Frantisek Pithart (sitting second from left), Stojan Puc (sitting third from left) and tournament winner Rudolf Maric (standing third from left).
Frantisek Pithart (1915-2003) was a Czech chess master, trainer, publicist and official and in the 1950s one of the leading Czech chess players. He participated in the Czechoslovak Chess Championships finals six times and twice (1955, 1965) won the bronze medal. He represented the national team of Czechoslovakia at the Chess Olympiad in Helsinki 1952 and at the European Team Chess Championship 1957 (bronze medal).
Stojan Puc (1921-2004) was a Slovenian-Yugoslavian chess master. He won the Slovenian Chess Championship four times (1954, 1958, 1965, 1967). In 1950 he played in the Dubrovnik Chess Olympiad as reserve for the victorious Yugoslavia. He was awarded the International Master title in 1950 and Honorary Grandmaster title in 1984. The Puc Variation of the Nimzo-Indian Defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4 4.e3 c6) is named after him.
Rufolf Maric (1927-1990) was a Yugoslav chess master and author. In 1956, he represented Yugoslavia at the World Student Team Chess Championship, won the team bronze medal and the individual gold medal for his board. In 1978, he won the 3rd Chess Mitropa Cup with the Yugoslav team. In 1970 he defeated Tigran Petrosian in an almost miniature game at the 1970 Vinkovci tournament. He was awarded the International Master title in 1964 and Honorary Grandmaster in 1990 shortly after his death.
