PHILIDOR'S AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE!!

On page 64 of the PDF (David DeLucia Collection Highlights of the Chess Library. Autographs and Ephemera) from the following link, http://www.chessbookstore.com/downloads/highlightsLibraryAutographs1.pdf, the great Chess expert and collector, David DeLucia, tells us the following:

"I have had four Philidor letters, now one,

as none of my letters had any chess content."

Dédiée A MONSEIGNEUR LE DAUPHIN. La Musique par A. D. PHILIDOR. Les Paroles de Mrs. G... et C...

Paris, Chez L'Auteur et Mr. Le Clerc, (1763). Beautiful private green marbled hardback binding with gold Title on spine. IV unnumbered pages (including Title page) + 80 pages. 34,1 x 25,7 cm. In French. Very rare Autograph signature of PHILIDOR in the lower outer corner of the Title Page!!

Very good to excellent: Minor defects such as some slight foxing stain (somewhat more visible on the first IV unnumbered pages and on page 1), some light stains on the Title Page near the lower inner corner and the upper outer corner, and a small ink stain in the middle of page 15 that also affects page 14. Otherwise, considering the age of the Musical Score, in excellent condition.

PHILIDOR's Musical Scores are very rare, and SIGNED BY HIM they are EXTREMELY RARE!!

According to the experience of the great Chess Collector, David DeLucia, getting Philidor's signature on any book or document related to Chess is almost impossible to find. His collection, probably the best in the world, still does not have Philidor's signature in relation to Chess. However, Philidor, in addition to "World Champion" of Chess, was even more recognized in his time as a Musician and Composer of Operas. Therefore, the present document of this auction, one of his most famous Operas with his signature, is a unique object.

First edition of this score dedicated to the Dauphin of the time, i.e. Louis de France (1729-1765), son of Louis XV and father of Louis XVI. It was performed at Versailles "before their Majesties" on 15 March 1763.

The copy is enriched with Philidor's autograph signature on the title page, "ADPhilidor". Philidor seems to have signed some copies of this edition, for example the copies in the BnF or the British Library, but not the one in the BM of Lyon.

Philidor, considered to be one of the creators of comic opera, obtained his first success with Blaise le Savetier in 1759 and thus a pension from Louis XV. He went on to have many successes, including this work.

On the back of the title page is a period (merchant) label of Christophe Le Menu de Saint Philibert (ca.1720-1774) under the sign "A la clef d'or". He was notably a composer and music merchant for Madame la Dauphine and sought out "old operas" which he sold. His activity continued after his death, his widow and his son-in-law, Charles-Georges Boyer, having taken over the business. Boyer sold the business in 1796.
