DESCRIPTION

Od „Honoratki” do Wierzbowej. Życie szachowe w Warszawie w latach 1829-1939. - 2020 - I-sze wydanie

by Tadeusz Wolsza

From "Honoratka" to Wierzbowa. Chess life in Warsaw in the years 1829-1939. - 2020 - 1st edition by Tadeusz Wolsza Chess life in Warsaw began on a large scale in the late 1820s. The masters of the royal game met in the "Honoratka" cafe. For over 100 years, it developed so dynamically that at the end of 1899 the Warsaw Society of Chess Supporters was established, with the final seat in the premises at ul. Willow. Among the leading players in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the following attracted attention: Aleksander Hoffman, Szymon Winawer, Jan Kleczyński (father), Józef Żabiński, Artur Popławski, Aleksander Flamberg, Salomon Langleben, Akiba Rubinstein and after regaining Poland of Independence: Zdzisław Belsitzman, Dawid Przepiórka, Mojżesz Łowcki, Kazimierz Makarczyk, Paulin Frydman, Regina Gerlecka and Mieczysław Najdorf. The most outstanding masters and grandmasters came to Warsaw, lured by the power of the local top players, including, among others, Alexander Petrov, Mikhail Chigorin, Prince Abdria Dadiani of Mingrelia, Emanuel Lasker, Frank J. Marshall, Jose Raul Capablanca, Yefim Bogolyubov, Alexander Alekhine, Rudolf Spielmann and Gideon Stahlberg. The outbreak of war in 1939 and its aftermath, including the crimes of German and Soviet aggressors, destroyed the power of Polish chess after 110 years of development. Unfortunately, it was not rebuilt after the end of the war in 1945.
