A beautifully produced book depicting the place of chess in the life of mankind over the centuries, it is a historical and anecdotal thing, but extremely interesting; A must read for any game lover.
The text of the book is written in the form of a story, divided into 10 chapters. The author begins with the history of chess, characteristics and analysis of a given game, acquaints the reader with the development of forms and rules of the game, with various types of games on the chessboard, he gradually moves on to consider the role of chess in literature, painting, graphics, theater and film. The author includes extensive excerpts from the works of famous poets and writers who devoted their works to the subject of chess. The reader will find many interesting anecdotes and events related to the game of chess in the chapter about great historical figures, kings, leaders, politicians, thinkers and scientists, writers, painters and musicians - who played this beautiful game with passion, and sometimes with passion. The rich illustrative material (325 prints) includes photographs of chess figures from various eras and countries, reproductions of old and contemporary paintings, photos from films and plays, photographs of great chess masters, color boards and chess-themed drawings by well-known Polish painters and graphic artists, such as Berezowska , Petry-Przybylska, Jurgielewicz, Lengren, Marczyński, Skarżyński, Zaruba.
J. Giżycki's book gained great publicity in the world. The great collector of chess literature Dr. M. Niemeijer from the Netherlands wrote: “… For less than two weeks I have been in possession of your beautiful book “Z Chess Through Ages and Countries”. There has never been anything like it before in all the literature of the world… … I am happy to learn that this exceptionally beautiful book is also to be published in Polish…” (Jerzy Giżycki's book Z Chesami Through the Ages and Countries was first published in Russian in late 1958 as an export edition).
