Original photo from the opening (or closing) of the zonal tournament in Prague 1985. Romanian participants are seated at the table. On the right is GM Florin Gheorghiu, in the middle is GM Mihai Suba. Author of the photo: Helena Sukova (her stamp is on the back). Size 17,5 x 11,5 cm.
Florin Gheorghiu (born 6 April 1944) is a Romanian chess player, International Grandmaster, World Junior Chess Champion 1963 and nine-times Romanian Chess Champion (1960, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1973, 1977 and 1987). He played in every Chess Olympiad between 1962 and 1990, usually on the first board. His peak rating was 2605, which ranked him 10th in the world in January 1980.
Mihai Suba (born 1 June 1947) is a Romanian and Spanish chess player, International Grandmaster and three-times Romanian Chess Champion (1980, 1981, 1985). He started playing chess at the age of 19, which is unique for a chess grandmaster. Especially considering that in 1982 he almost advanced from the Interzonal tournament to the Candidates tournament (he was third behind Ribli and Smyslov) and in 1986 he was ranked 20th in the world rankings (along with Yasser Seirawan). In 2008, he became a senior world champion (along with Larry Kaufman). He wrote the books Dynamic Chess Strategy and the monograph The Hedgehog.
Condition - Good Minus: the paper tends to curl.
