Original photo postcard with Czech participants at the international chess festival in Vrnjacka Banja 1970. Size 13,5 x 8,8 cm.

It was an open tournament with 68 participants (50 players from Yugoslavia and 18 from abroad) played by the Swiss system for 13 rounds. The top two players in the overall standings advanced to the International Grandmaster Tournament in 1971. The winner was Hungarian Ivan Farago ahead of Laszlo Vadasz and Ivan Nemet.

Frantisek Pithart (1915 - 2003) was a Czech chess master, trainer, publicist and official. In the 1950s he was one of the leading Czech chess players. He participated in the Czechoslovak Chess Championships finals six times and twice (1955, 1965) won the bronze medal. He represented the national team of Czechoslovakia at the Chess Olympiads in Helsinki 1952 and at the European Team Chess Championship 1957 (bronze medal).

Jan Smejkal (born 1946) is a Czech chess player and International Grandmaster. One of the world's best players in the 1970s. He was champion of Czechoslovakia in 1973, 1979 and 1986, and won many international tournaments. Between 1968 and 1994 he represented the national team at ten Chess Olympiads and won a silver medal in 1982.

Slavoj Kupka (1943-2010) was a Czech chess master, junior champion of Czechoslovakia 1958 (ahead of Jansa and Hort) and member of the winning Czechoslovak team at the Student World Chess Championship in Budva 1963.

 

Josef Pribyl (born 1947) is a Czech chess player and International Master. One of the best Czech players in the 70s and 80s. His best result at the Czechoslovak championship was 2nd place in 1983, besides that he has 4 bronze medals. He played at the Chess Olympiads in the years 1970, 1972 and 1974.

 

Ervin Nowak (born 1943) - Czech chess master, champion of Czechoslovak army 1967. He achieved his greatest success in 1965, when he finished 2nd in the Czechoslovak championship.
