DESCRIPTION

ALEXANDRE DESCHAPELLES

Autograph letter signed to his notary!!

+ another letter related to Chess!!

March 22, 1846

Lebreton-Deschapelles, Alexandre-Louis-Honoré: Autograph letter signed to his notary.

Paris, 1846. Half a page in-8. 20,7 x 13,1 cm. The additional letter measures 21,3 x 13,6 cm. In French. Very rare Autograph signature of DESCHAPELLES!!

Good: Letter with folds, some wrinkles and some slight and minuscule stain. It is perfectly clear that the sheet itself was the letter itself, since the hole it has is due to being glued to the top of the page, and when it was opened it logically produced that tear. In addition, one of the faces shows perfectly who it is addressed to and the address.

Google Translator:

He tells her that their mutual friend has come out of "a nasty bout of gout", and that on his side, he has trouble breathing. “I tell you this for the fear of not being able to move in the in case you deem it appropriate to complete the protocol that has been open at home for three months…”.

We attach an handwritten note from another unknown hand, referring to the descent and career of Deschapelles, according to a certain Joseph Méry, also a great chess player. In 1836, he founded with Louis-Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais the first chess magazine Le Palamède. La Bourdonnais is also mentioned in this letter, as well as one of Deschapelles' works, "A Treatise on Whist". At the beginning of this letter the famous chess and whist player Deschapelles is mentioned.

A VERY RARE SIGNATURE OF A GREAT PLAYER, CONSIDERED THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD AFTER THE DEATH OF PHILIDOR, WHO IS NOT PRESENT IN SOME WELL-KNOWN AUTOGRAPH COLLECTIONS!!

DESCHAPELLES (1780-1847): famous chess player who was also a soldier of the Revolution and the Empire wounded at the Battle of Ettlingen in 1796, then aged 16. He was considered the best player in the world between Philidor and Louis Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais to whom he notably gave lessons, which ended up dethroning him.‎ Very interesting and complementary are the following 2 links (the 1st in French and the 2nd in English) from Wikipedia: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandre_Deschapelles and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandre_Deschapelles

A precious Biography is visible at the following link: https://lecafedelaregence.blogspot.com/2015/09/courte-biographie-de-deschapelles.html

Honestly, I was not 100% sure of the authenticity of Deschapelles' signature, since for much of his life he signed as Lebreton Deschapelles. But this letter was written by Deschapelles at the age of 66, a very advanced age at that time, and perhaps his signature was no longer the same as when he was young, in which an energy was visible that he certainly did not have at 66, just 1 year and a half before his death in October 1847. Fortunately I have found a unique document about Deschapelles, written by Jean Olivier Leconte, in which he acknowledges that practically everything we know about Deschapelles is due to Pierre Baudrier, on page 3 of which you can see the signature of 1804, and the signature on page 14 corresponding to the 1st Testament of Deschapelles (identical to the one on my Letter). It is the PDF Document that appears in the following link: https://lecafedelaregence.blogspot.com/2021/03/deschapelles-mythes-et-realites.html. It is possible to download it at the following link: https://docs.google.com/file/d/1gKO3aHWJYkivQj3KyxUESHv4Pj0UppBM/view.

In Document 41 of the following link it is possible to see the Death Certificate of Deschapelles: https://archives.paris.fr/arkotheque/visionneuse/visionneuse.php?arko=YTo2OntzOjQ6ImRhdGUiO3M6MTA6IjIwMjEtMDktMDgiO3M6MTA6InR5cGVfZm9uZHMiO3M6MTE6ImFya29fc2VyaWVsIjtzOjQ6InJlZjEiO2k6NTtzOjQ6InJlZjIiO2k6Nzk3MzI7czoxNjoidmlzaW9ubmV1c2VfaHRtbCI7YjoxO3M6MjE6InZpc2lvbm5ldXNlX2h0bWxfbW9kZSI7czo0OiJwcm9kIjt9#uielem_move=0%2C0&uielem_rotate=F&uielem_islocked=0&uielem_zoom=31
